OUR WATERS

Truckee River, Little Truckee, East Carson, East Walker and Pyramid Lake: we have them all covered!

Unlike many fly fishing destinations, the northeastern Sierra and northern Nevada provide year-round angling. No matter when you are coming to town, we have somewhere for you to wet a line. The Truckee, Little Truckee and Walker Rivers provide excellent stream fishing opportunities for the fly fisher.

Smaller streams and creeks in the Sierra also provide opportunities to do a little back country fishing. Most of these waters are best fished in the summer months and give you the chance to try your skills on fish that rarely see a fly.

Special Regulations – Sections on many of these waters have regulations to promote quality fisheries and insure a great future for generations of fly fishermen to come. These regulations create areas for fly fishing only and help us to offer our clients a chance to have some success while learning the sport as well as for advanced anglers to target wild fish that do not see much pressure.

The Reno-Tahoe area has a wide variety of stillwater fisheries as well. From larger lakes like Eagle, Davis and Frenchman’s to smaller impoundments like Milton and Spooner, these waters can provide some awesome boat, float tube or walk/wade opportunities.

During the winter and spring months, anglers come from all over the globe to fish for the largest Cutthroat trout in the world at Pyramid Lake. It is not uncommon to see fish in the 10 to 15 pound range caught on a fly rod. Our staff is responsible for designing many of the most effective fly patterns for catching these giant fish. Let us help you catch a fish of a lifetime at Pyramid Lake.

TRUCKEE RIVER

The Truckee River flows out of Lake Tahoe at Tahoe City and runs north and east through the towns of Truckee and Reno and finally winds its way to its destination, Pyramid Lake.

The California side can be broken into 3 sections – The upper section would be considered the stretch from Lake Tahoe to the Town of Truckee. This section is open for fishing from the last Saturday in April until November 15th. The entire section has general regulations and is known better for rafting than fishing. That being said, it can be a lot of fun to fish.

LITTLE TRUCKEE RIVER

The Truckee River flows out of Lake Tahoe at Tahoe City and runs north and east through the towns of Truckee and Reno and finally winds its way to its destination, Pyramid Lake.

EAST WALKER RIVER

The East Walker River flows from Bridgeport Reservoir in California and continues eastward into Nevada. This stretch of the river is now open to fishing all year in both states. The reservoir stores water for irrigation downstream in Nevada, thus flows vary from season to season. In spring, summer and early fall the flows can jump up and down almost daily. Best flows for fishing are 50 cfs to 300 cfs. You can fish above 300 cfs, but it gets difficult to cross the river above this flow. Big drops or rises in the flow (50+ cfs) seem to put the fish down until the flow stabilizes. The bigger the change, the longer the fish seem to be affected. In the winter months flows are a stable 25 – 50 cfs and do not vary much. Check the flows before you go!

PYRAMID LAKE

Our Pyramid Lake guides have been issued a guide license from the Pyramid Lake Tribal Council. This is required of everyone who guides the waters of Pyramid Lake

Pyramid Lake is well known for its outstanding fly fishing. Having the correct gear and knowing when and where to fish are important factors in successful fishing at Pyramid. For the most part, this is a wintertime and spring fishery. Being prepared for changes in weather and fishing conditions plays an important role in having a memorable day at the lake.
