2018 Fall Fishing Forecast

Fall Fishing Forecast

We are heading into maybe the best time to be out on the water all year. Cooler weather, active fish and less fishing pressure all play a part. We have plenty of water in all of our local waters and there are going to be a lot of choices of places to fish this fall.

Let’s start with the lakes. Pyramid Lake opener is October 1st and usually this is a good time to fish the lake. Tui Chub Minnows are usually schooled up near shore and the Trout are not too far behind. Other area lakes like Davis and Frenchman’s just got stocked and should be good as well. IF you are looking to catch something other than trout Lahontan Reservoir has been on fire for Wipers and Bass. If you are looking to travel some or do a weekend trip there are some lakes in Nevada that are normally really good in the fall. South Fork Reservoir outside of Elko is a good option as is Wild Horse which is 90 minutes North of Elko. Knott Creek is already fishing pretty good and should continue for another month or so. Cummins Lake near Ely has made a tremendous comeback and Illipah Reservoir can also fish well. Basically, this would be a good year to explore some of these awesome places because we have plenty of water.

For the rivers, it is hard to beat the East Walker in the fall. It can be fished all day there are not too many anglers and some very active fish. Check the flows before you go as it gets cold and slow when the flows get under 50 CFS. The Truckee is getting better and better every day and soon we will see fall hatches of October Caddis and Baetis. The Little Truckee can be really good in the fall until they drop the flows down below 30 CFS. The East Carson River can be good but it is mainly a freestone river with no water control and it is starting to get pretty low. The Owens river can fish good and could be part of a road trip that could include the East Walker and Crowley Lake. It has been a few years since we had so many decent options for fishing and who know when it could change again so get out there and fish!
